Wine storage, known as cellaring is the method of storing wine safely in a controlled environment. Since wine is extremely sensitive to its storage conditions it is important to create an optimal environment to ensure the wine matures safely and completely. Storing wine is a complex process that must be done correctly to maintain perfect-tasting wine. Follow these wine storage tips to become an expert in home wine storage. Wine requires an expert approach due to its nature and air conditioning or home refrigeration do not provide adequate solutions.
Designed with a Purpose
Wine should be stored in wine racks which are designed to hold the wine horizontally at a slight angle so that the wine remains in contact with the cork. This keeps the cork moist and elastic and prevents it from becoming dried out. If a cork becomes dry it will shrivel becoming smaller in size. If this occurs, the seal on the bottle becomes broken allowing oxygen to enter the bottle. This causes oxidation which destroys the taste of the wine, essentially turning formerly fine wine into expensive vinegar.
Additional Storage Considerations
Humidity – Wine requires a humidity range of between 70% – 80%. If wine is stored in an environment that is too dry, the cork will shrink allowing air into the bottle, ruining the contents.
Temperature – The optimal temperature for storing wine is about 57 degrees Fahrenheit or 14 degrees Celsius. A cool and stable temperature is the most ideal environment. Too many fluctuations will ruin the wine.
Light – The racks should be placed in a dark environment to protect the wine from both sun and artificial light. Light can affect the usually stable organic compounds, including the tannins, which contribute to the flavor, aroma and texture of the wine. The bottles should be stored in the dark to eliminate the risk of chemical reactions that may be caused by exposure to light.
Containers used for bottling – Dark glass bottles are best.
Calm – Too much noise or vibrations can adversely affect the quality of wine. Vibrations can prevent it from becoming settled and unable to mature properly. It is best to avoid using areas such as laundry rooms, garages, mechanical rooms, boiler rooms or any other space where vibrations may interfere with the wine aging slowly and fully.
Odors – Avoid using any room which is subject to strong odors. Do not store fruits, vegetables, cheeses, or other foods capable of fermenting nearby. Also avoid storing chemicals such as paint or motor oil nearby as these odors can seep in through the cork and adversely affect the flavor of the wine.
All wine does not need to be stored. White and sparkling wines, for example, are best consumed fresh or can be chilled before serving. Red wines are the ones that are generally stored. But most wines that you purchase in liquor stores are not designed to be aged at all, they are produced to be drunk shortly after bottling.
