Wine In The United States
by: Rose Barrett
Worldwide, all levels of wine lovers consume this tasty beverage. The great thing about wine is that it can go great with your dinner or it can be consumed by itself. While most individuals think of Europe as being the best wine producer, there are many great offerings that come from the United States. Did you know that the United States is the fourth largest producer of wine just behind Italy, France and Spain? All 50 states produce wine but California is by far the head of the pack. In fact, California producers even more wine than the entire country of Australia combined. Washington, Oregon and New York are also well-known for their wine.
The drink has been produced in the U.S. for more than 300 years now. Jacksonville, Florida was home to the very first wine in America. It was created in 1562 by French settlers and was produced from Scuppernong grapes. North America was referred to as Vinland by original European settlers due to the large amount of vines found there.
Wine has been commercially produced in America since 1799. The Kentucky Legislature established the first vineyard in the U.S. Since then, aside from Prohibition during the 1920s, vino has been a large part of the American cultural scene. Research on innovative winemaking techniques and grape types has been accomplished more recently in American universities.
The United States continues to make great strides in becoming a world leader in wine making by winning several international competitions.
